The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) created the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in waters previously regarded as high seas. The aim of the convention was to accord new rights to coastal states to manage resources found in their adjacent seas, extending outwards to a maximum of 200 nautical miles, whilst maintaining freedom of navigation and movement for other states. “Roughly 36 percent of the world’s oceans lie within 200 nautical miles of a coastline.
